WiFi not working has emerged as one of the most common issues for users who upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 or 8. And even when Windows shows that you have the most updated driver, still your WiFi won’t work. So, the solution to this issue can vary from brand to brand and from model to model as the required driver of Wireless device would differ too.
Fix WiFi not working issue in HP Pavilion & Compaq having Windows 10
Since HP Pavilion series have Ralink RTXXXX 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adaptor in it, Microsoft shall not be able to find the updated driver of it. Maybe they don’t have the updated driver in their database. Also, the wireless adapter of Ralink is there in many models of the HP Pavilion series. Hence, if your laptop is one of the models of them, you can check if your laptop is having one of the following Ralink adapters or not?
- 802.11n Wireless PCI Express Card LAN Adapter
- Mediatek MT7630E 802.11bgn Wi-Fi Adapter
- Ralink RT3090 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter

- Ralink RT5390 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter
- Ralink RT5390R 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter
Although there are many models I am not aware of would have a wireless adapter from the above list, but I am not aware of it. If installing the native way i.e., the automatic install doesn’t work for you, then install the driver manually for it.
- Right-click on the respective wireless adapter in Device Manager
- Select Properties > Driver > Update Driver
- Select Browser my computer for driver software
- Give it the path where above said mentioned driver extracted his files and click Next.
- It’ll automatically pick the driver from the path and install it.
If it still can’t work, first uninstall or Rollback wireless driver before updating it manually, as I mentioned above.
Hi, I had a problem with my hp Pavillion model 15-g040ca losing wifi and it wasn’t the driver at all. It was a hardware problem where the wire from the wifi adaptor got cut where it passes up from the base into the screen. I fixed it by bringing the wire outside of the laptop and connecting it to a small antenna.
I suspect most of the hp laptops suffer from the same problem when I read other posts on different sites.
Anyway I thought I would share this with your readers since I was furious looking for answers also.
Thanks for the heads up 🙂
the solution works ! thumb up!!!!
I had the problem that the wifi would lose its gateway after a few minutes. After HP help desk instructed me to reload drives and all the other common suggested fixes it was just as bad. I connected the laptop to the router by wire and it worked fine confirming it was wifi problem I then moved the laptop closer to the router and it was fine. I tried other rooms in house it was OK but in the kitchen where we originally had the problem it still kept losing the gateway. Then I notice I could see my more routers from neighbours in the kitchen than elsewhere. The short answer was the fault was rf interference from a neighbours router. A ping test confirmed I was losing 20% of packets of data. I changed channel on my router and all is now OK
HP has knowingly put faulty Realtek RTL8188EE WiFi adapters into their products since June 2014. This is a known issue that HP refuses to address.
I spent 2 months trying to figure out the problem. I spent 5 hours on the phone with Microsoft and they couldn’t fix the issue…even after remotely taking over my computer. I spent $50 on a NetGear external WiFi adapter…and it worked great. However, since my computer is less than a year old, I shouldn’t have to have an external.
The problem is the internal WiFi adapter itself. It is a faulty component that people have been complaining about since 2014. I called HP’s corporate office and stated that I was aware that they knew of the issue, and could provide more than 10 pages from just one thread of their HP Forum where hundreds of others, were having the same issue. I threatened them with a class action lawsuit if they didn’t do something about it immediately.
They have agreed (in writing) that they will fix my laptop and replace the WiFi adapter card FREE OF CHARGE. I suggest that every one else, who is experiencing this issue, call the HP Corporate office at : 650-857-1501. Press “0” and speak to an operator. Tell them you want to speak to a US Case Manager about this ongoing issue. IF the case manager refuses to assist you, then call the Corporate office number back, press “0” and ask to speak to an “Executive Customer Relations” associate. They WILL (AND MUST) FIX THIS KNOWN ISSUE AT NO COST TO YOU!
Apparently, this is such a “hot topic” that, with what I know about this issue, I am being “silenced” on the HP forum. They don’t want people to know that they can fix it by replacing the adapter with one that is NOT a Realtek component. They don’t want you to know that you have RIGHTS as a consumer!
Thanks for sharing the insights.. I hope that it may come useful for future readers of this article.
ChelBell – How did you get it in writing? Do you have an example I could reference when I call?
I tried to contact them and they are refusing to help because they claim they no longer support my devise since 2018. And I have never contacted them about this issue before because I have been trying to fix it on .
help! I have a s5-1100 hp pavillion slimline. I cannot connect to internet. There fore i am using another computer and downloading, etc. What a pain. I updated my drivers but can’t figure out the wireless driver. I can’t update it on the computer because 1. I’m not connected to internet and 2. there is no wireless driver to update. Please help. I’m tired of un-connecting moniters and going back and forth on computers.
try using a LAN cable
After hours of searching all websites and trying all given solutions, yours worked!!After installing the drivers, that actually I had all downloaded them at some point, the manual update is the one that worked. Thank you 🙂
